The GCC from Dubai

Five neighbouring states, one residence visa that unlocks most of them and a border run to Oman that costs less than brunch. Every rule below is dated and linked to its official source.

Quick answer

A valid UAE residence visa unlocks resident-entry schemes across the GCC — Saudi Arabia's eVisa now covers all professions, Kuwait grants visa on arrival with 6 months of residence validity and Qatar's Hayya A2 gives 60 days multiple entry for QAR 100. The cheapest border run is Oman via Hatta: AED 35 exit fee, an OMR 5 visa and border insurance from about AED 106 — roughly AED 400 per car before fuel. Rules vary by passport, so check your exact case in the explorer and confirm at the official portal before booking.

What Changed Recently

2025 was the biggest liberalisation of GCC resident travel in a decade — guides written before November 2025 understate your access.

November 2025

Saudi Arabia scrapped the profession list for its GCC-resident eVisa and added a 1-year multiple-entry eVisa for UAE residents — 90 days per stay, covering tourism, business, family visits and Umrah.

August–December 2025

Kuwait opened visa on arrival to all GCC residents with 6+ months on their permit (ending the 2008 professions list), then set entry and visit visa fees at KWD 10 per month from 23 December 2025.

30 November 2025

Qatar upgraded the Hayya A2 GCC-resident visa from 30 days single entry to 60 days multiple entry, QAR 100.

The Hatta–Oman Border Run

Dubai's favourite road trip: about 90 minutes to the Hatta–Al Wajajah crossing, then mountains, wadis and Muscat beyond.

  • UAE exit fee: AED 35 per person, paid at the UAE post.
  • Omani visa: visa on arrival (OMR 5, 14 days) or the unsponsored GCC-resident eVisa (OMR 5, 28 days) via evisa.rop.gov.om. Both require your UAE residence visa to be valid 3+ months and the occupation on your Emirates ID to be on ROP's approved list — now more than 130 professions. If your Emirates ID shows an outdated job title, update it before travelling.
  • Vehicle papers: driving licence, mulkiya and proof of ownership. Rented, borrowed or bank-financed cars need a notarised Arabic no-objection letter.
  • Insurance: Omani third-party cover is mandatory — either an Orange Card or Oman extension from your UAE insurer (often free or cheap) or bought at the border from about AED 106 for the 5-day minimum.
  • All-in: a typical weekend crossing runs about AED 400 per car in fees before fuel and hotels.

Expert Tip

Cross early on Friday morning — the Hatta post queues badly on long weekends and Eid breaks. And fill up in the UAE: petrol is cheaper on this side of the border.

Longer Hauls: Saudi Arabia and Qatar

Saudi Arabia by road

Cross at Al Ghuwaifat (UAE) / Al Batha (KSA), open 24 hours with the Smart Land Border system on the UAE side. Carry your Emirates ID, passport, licence, mulkiya and Saudi visa. UAE car insurance generally does not cover the Kingdom — buy Saudi third-party cover through the official Manafith platform online before you go or at the border. The GCC-resident eVisa covers all professions, and since November 2025 a 1-year multiple-entry eVisa is open to UAE residents.

Qatar via Saudi transit

There is no UAE–Qatar land border — the drive transits Saudi Arabia to the Salwa/Abu Samra crossing. You need documents for both legs: a Saudi eVisa or 96-hour transit visa plus Manafith insurance, then the Hayya A2 GCC-resident visa (QAR 100, 60 days multiple entry since November 2025) and separate Qatari third-party cover at entry. Most residents fly; drive it for the adventure, not the savings.

Car Insurance per Border

DestinationWhat you need
OmanOrange Card or insurer's Oman extension; border third-party cover from ~AED 106 for 5 days
Saudi ArabiaSaudi third-party policy via the official Manafith platform — UAE policies generally do not cover KSA
QatarSeparate Qatari third-party cover at or before the Abu Samra crossing
Bahrain / KuwaitSeparate cover per country in practice — confirm with your insurer before travelling; Bahrain by road also means crossing Saudi Arabia first

GCC Travel FAQ

Can UAE residents drive to Oman for the weekend?+
Yes — the Hatta–Al Wajajah crossing is about 90 minutes from Dubai. Budget AED 35 per person for the UAE exit fee, around AED 48 (OMR 5) for the Omani visa and roughly AED 106 for five days of mandatory Omani third-party car insurance if you buy at the border. A weekend for a couple in one car lands near AED 400 before fuel and hotels.
Does my job title still matter for GCC visas?+
Less than it used to, but sometimes yes. Saudi Arabia removed its profession condition for GCC-resident eVisas and Kuwait ended its approved-professions list in August 2025. Oman still keys eligibility off the occupation printed on your Emirates ID against an approved list of 130+ professions — if your Emirates ID says an old job title, update it before travelling.
Does my UAE car insurance cover other GCC countries?+
Not automatically. For Oman you need an Orange Card or a paid Oman extension from your insurer, or you buy third-party cover at the border. Saudi Arabia is stricter — UAE policies generally do not cover the Kingdom at all, and foreign vehicles buy Saudi third-party insurance through the official Manafith platform. Qatar requires its own cover at the Abu Samra border. Ask your insurer before every trip.
Is there a land border between the UAE and Qatar?+
No. Driving to Qatar means transiting Saudi Arabia — Al Ghuwaifat into the Kingdom, then the Salwa/Abu Samra crossing into Qatar. You need paperwork for both legs: a Saudi eVisa or transit visa plus Saudi vehicle insurance, and a Qatar Hayya visa plus Qatari insurance. Rented or financed cars also need a notarised no-objection letter.
How much UAE residence validity do I need for these visas?+
Most GCC-resident schemes require your UAE residence visa to be valid for at least 3 more months at entry — Kuwait asks for 6. If your residence visa is close to renewal, sort that first; the explorer flags exactly this for your passport.
Do these rules depend on my passport?+
Yes — the resident schemes sit on top of whatever your passport gets on its own. A British passport enters some GCC states visa-free on arrival while other passports use the GCC-resident eVisa route for the same border. The table above shows the verified rule per passport, and the Visa-Free Travel Explorer computes your personal list.
