Moving from Nigeria to Dubai

An estimated 100,000+ Nigerians live in the UAE, and the route here has its own rules — the DVN, a five-step attestation chain and a remittance corridor that changed in 2026. Here is the honest version.

Quick answer

Since the visa ban lifted on 15 July 2024, Nigerians reach Dubai through three channels — a family-sponsored visit, an employer entry permit or the VFS tourist route — and every applicant over 13 first needs a Document Verification Number. Before you fly, run the attestation chain in Nigeria (2–4 weeks, roughly ₦200,000–₦350,000 per document all-in) and finish with UAE MOFAIC attestation at AED 150 per document. Your Nigerian income tax of up to 25% under the NTA becomes zero here; use the calculator below for your exact number.

Visas and the DVN

The UAE lifted its October 2022 visa suspension for Nigerian passport holders on 15 July 2024 — with new controls. Immigration decisions are discretionary; what follows is the published process, not a promise.

1. Document Verification Number

Every Nigerian applicant over 13 needs a DVN from documentverificationhub.ae before any visa application — identity documents plus travel history, issued in about 5 working days. The fee was ₦640,000–₦690,000 at launch and tracks the exchange rate; confirm the current figure on the hub itself.

2. Pick your channel

A UAE-resident relative can sponsor a visit (salary tiers from AED 4,000/month — run the checker), an employer can sponsor an entry permit, or apply for a tourist visa through VFS Global — about ₦134,000 for 30 days at last check.

3. Expect document checks

Carry printed copies of your visa, DVN confirmation, return ticket and accommodation. Airlines at Lagos verify entry documents at check-in and can deny boarding if anything is missing.

Expert Tip

Solo applicants aged 18–41 have reportedly been asked for bank statements showing a healthy balance over six months on the tourist channel. If a relative in the UAE can sponsor you instead, the family-visit route has published, checkable criteria.

Your Tax Savings

Under the Nigeria Tax Act rates effective January 2026, salaried income is taxed up to 25% plus pension and NHF contributions. Dubai charges zero personal income tax.

The Attestation Chain

Degrees, birth and marriage certificates must be legalized in Nigeria before the UAE will accept them. Run the chain before you fly — plan 2–4 weeks Nigeria-side and roughly ₦200,000–₦350,000 per document all-in, mostly at the VFS step. Figures are indicative agency rates from mid-2026; the naira legs move with the exchange rate.

  1. 1

Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja (academic documents)

Academic certificates need FMoE attestation plus the Letter of Eligibility — applications without it are rejected at the next step. Allow 7–10 business days.

  2. 2

Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication

Legal and Consular Services in Abuja authenticates the document. Allow 5–7 business days.

  3. 3

UAE Embassy legalization via VFS Global

Since late 2025 the UAE Embassy leg runs through VFS Global attestation centres in Abuja and Lagos. This is the expensive step — budget roughly ₦190,000–200,000 per document (the fee tracks the exchange rate). Allow 4–5 working days.

  4. 4

    UAE MOFAIC attestation after arrival

The final stamp happens in the UAE through the MOFAIC digital platform — AED 150 per personal or educational document, about 3 business days.

Police clearance heads-up: ICP is phasing in a home-country police clearance requirement for 45 nationalities from 16 June 2026, with Nigeria reported in the second phase. The Nigeria Police Character Certificate needs the same attestation chain. Confirm the live status on icp.gov.ae before your application.

Banking & Remittance

The corridor changed on 1 May 2026: the Central Bank of Nigeria now requires transfer operators to pay out diaspora remittances in naira at the market rate. Anyone telling you the recipient can still choose dollars is working from old information.

Exchange Houses

Al Ansari Exchange and LuLu Exchange both serve the Nigeria corridor with bank deposit and cash pickup, flat fees typically AED 15–AED 50. Compare the naira rate on the day — the spread matters more than the fee.

Receiving in Nigeria

Recipients get naira under the CBN's 2026 settlement rule. Domiciliary accounts remain legal for holding foreign currency in Nigeria — useful if you transfer bank-to-bank rather than through a transfer operator.

UAE Banks

Open your UAE account with Emirates NBD, ADCB or Mashreq once your Emirates ID arrives. UBA has a DIFC branch but it serves corporate and institutional clients only — day-to-day banking happens with UAE retail banks.

Expert Tip

Banks apply enhanced checks to some new accounts and the fix is paperwork, not persistence: bring your salary certificate, attested contract and Emirates ID to the branch, answer source-of-funds questions precisely and never restate facts differently across applications — banks share information.

Schools for Nigerian Families

No Nigerian Curriculum

No KHDA-licensed school in Dubai teaches the Nigerian curriculum and there is no WAEC or NECO exam-centre school — plan for a curriculum switch rather than hoping to find one.

British Curriculum

The natural fit — many Nigerian private schools already teach IGCSE alongside WAEC, so the transition is smooth. Fees range from AED 15,000 to AED 90,000/yr depending on the school's rating.

WAEC / NECO Recognition

The UAE Ministry of Education runs an equivalency service that recognises attested WAEC and NECO results for Grade-12 equivalency. Schools assess transfer certificates and attested reports individually for placement.

Nigerian Community in Dubai

NIDO UAE

The Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation's UAE chapter is the established community body — active on Facebook, X and Instagram with networking events and national-day celebrations. The Nigerian Community UAE Facebook group is the practical noticeboard for housing, jobs and arrivals questions.

Food & Culture

Enish near Trade Centre, Suyaya in Business Bay and Africana Home Restaurant in Deira anchor the Nigerian food scene — jollof, suya and egusi without compromise. Deira's African community institutions go back to the mid-90s.

Where People Settle

There is no official nationality-by-neighbourhood data, but the community clusters in affordable districts — Deira and International City in Dubai, with many households across Sharjah and Ajman where rents run 30–50% lower.

Worship

Christian worship is legal at licensed premises — the Jebel Ali Churches Complex and Oud Metha host services across denominations, including congregations popular with the Nigerian community. Mosques are everywhere; Friday prayers need no introduction.

Getting Here and Getting Around

Flights

Emirates resumed its daily Lagos–Dubai service on 1 October 2024 (EK783/EK784, Boeing 777) after the two-year suspension. No direct Abuja–Dubai service was confirmed at our last review — Abuja travellers connect via Lagos or fly into Abu Dhabi.

Driving Licence

Nigeria is not on the RTA's direct-exchange list, so plan for the full driving-school route — theory, practical training and the RTA test, typically AED 4,500–AED 7,000. Check your exact path.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Nigerians get a Dubai visa now?

Yes. The UAE stopped issuing visas to Nigerian passport holders in October 2022 and lifted the ban on 15 July 2024 with updated conditions. The main channels that work today are a family-sponsored visit visa (a UAE-resident relative earning AED 4,000+ a month for first-degree relatives), an employment entry permit sponsored by a UAE employer and the tourist channel through VFS Global or licensed agencies. Every applicant over 13 first needs a Document Verification Number.

What is the DVN and how do I get one?

The Document Verification Number is a mandatory pre-check for Nigerian applicants over 13, obtained at documentverificationhub.ae before any UAE visa application. You submit identity documents and travel history and the number is issued in about 5 working days. The fee was roughly ₦640,000–₦690,000 at the July 2024 launch and moves with the exchange rate — confirm the current figure on the hub before paying anyone.

How long does document attestation take from Nigeria?

Plan for 2–4 weeks Nigeria-side if you start in Abuja, longer from other states. The chain is Federal Ministry of Education (academic documents), Nigerian MFA authentication, UAE Embassy legalization through VFS Global, then UAE MOFAIC attestation for AED 150 per document once you arrive. Start before you fly — running the chain from Dubai adds courier time and cost.

How do I send money home after the CBN naira rule?

From 1 May 2026 the Central Bank of Nigeria requires international money transfer operators to pay out diaspora remittances in naira at the market rate, so your family receives naira rather than dollars. Domiciliary accounts remain legal for holding foreign currency in Nigeria. From Dubai, exchange houses such as Al Ansari and LuLu serve the corridor with flat fees around AED 15–50; compare their naira rate against your bank before sending.

Are there Nigerian-curriculum schools in Dubai?

No KHDA-licensed school in Dubai teaches the Nigerian curriculum, and there is no WAEC or NECO exam-centre school. Most Nigerian families choose British-curriculum schools — a natural fit since many Nigerian private schools already teach IGCSE alongside WAEC. For older children, the UAE Ministry of Education runs an equivalency service that recognises attested WAEC/NECO results.

Can I fly direct from Nigeria to Dubai?

Emirates resumed its daily Lagos service on 1 October 2024 after the two-year suspension — EK783/EK784 on a Boeing 777. No direct Abuja–Dubai service was confirmed at our last review, so Abuja travellers typically connect through Lagos or fly into Abu Dhabi.

Can I swap my Nigerian driving licence in Dubai?

No — Nigeria is not on the RTA's direct-exchange list, so you take the full driving-school route: theory classes, practical training and the RTA test. Budget AED 4,500–7,000 and several weeks. Check the driving licence checker for the exact path and costs.

Do Nigerians need a police clearance certificate for a UAE work visa?

ICP is phasing in a home-country police clearance requirement for 45 nationalities from 16 June 2026, and reports place Nigeria in the second phase of the rollout. The Nigeria Police Character Certificate must then pass through the same attestation chain as other documents. Confirm the current status on icp.gov.ae before you apply — the requirement may not yet be live for your application date.
