IFA & offshore investment
warning patterns
High-pressure pension and offshore pitches are a settled-expat hazard. This page names practices and red flags — not firms — so you can verify licences and walk away from pressure.
Quick answer
Treat unsolicited pension or offshore-bond approaches as a red flag until you verify the firm on the SCA (onshore) or DFSA (DIFC) public register. Demand written fee disclosure, never sign in a first meeting and get a second opinion from a professional you chose yourself. We describe patterns here — not named companies.
Red-flag practices
These patterns show up repeatedly in resident reports. None of them prove a crime on their own — they are reasons to slow down and verify independently.
Cold call or LinkedIn pitch about your pension
You did not ask — they found you. Legitimate advice starts with your invitation, not theirs.
Urgency and secrecy
"This window closes Friday" or "don't tell your HR / spouse yet" is sales pressure, not fiduciary care.
Offshore wrappers you cannot explain
If you cannot describe in one sentence where your money sits, who regulates it and how you exit, do not sign.
Commission buried in the product
Large upfront charges on transfers, long surrender penalties or trail fees that are hard to find in the Key Information Document.
Licence that does not match the pitch
Business cards citing a foreign regulator while the conversation is about UAE-resident money — verify the UAE register first.
Guaranteed returns language
Investment returns are not guaranteed. Marketing that sounds like a bank deposit for equity or bond risk is a pattern to reject.
Verify before you talk
Onshore (most of Dubai)
Check the Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA) public register for the legal entity named on any proposal.
sca.gov.aeDIFC firms
Firms in the Dubai International Financial Centre are supervised by the DFSA. Match the registered name exactly.
dfsa.aeSafer process checklist
- Verify the firm on the SCA or DFSA public register before any meeting
- Ask for fee disclosure in writing — advice fee, product charge and trail
- Take documents home; never sign in the first meeting
- Get a second opinion from a professional you found independently
- Prefer fee-only arrangements you understand over product-led transfers
- Keep records of every call, WhatsApp and email
If you are mid-pitch right now
End the call politely. Do not share passport scans, Emirates ID numbers or existing portfolio statements until you have verified the firm yourself. A genuine professional will wait while you do that.
